A few years ago, Terry Gilliam, 64, packed his bags, sold his East Bay, California home, and moved to Florida. After founding two Facebook groups for California movers, he realized thousands more were in the same boat. His groups, Leaving California and Life After California, have nearly 300,000 members between them. Gilliam moved to Winter Park, a city of 29,000 outside Orlando, to help care for his parents. Van Edom, the Knoxville realtor, said Knoxville is a newly popular destination for California movers.

Two days after the colonoscopy, he had just checked into his hotel on a work trip when the doctor called to tell him he had colon cancer . Josh HertingHerting became one of the rising number of young Americans diagnosed with early-onset colon cancer. Herting's dad was diagnosed with stage one colon cancer in his early 50s, but genetic testing showed that this was unrelated to his own diagnosis. He's sharing his story to help raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of colon cancer and to encourage people to be proactive if they notice anything. Colorectal cancer deaths of people under 55 have increased by about 1% a year since the mid-2000s, the ACS said. "The youngest are doing better since the advocation of the vaccine, but there's a population sort of in their 30s that are having more cervical cancer," Annunziata said. For example, if you have Lynch syndrome , a genetic condition, your risk of developing colorectal cancer goes up by 20 to 80%. "That's a simple test that could be done in the doctor's office that can detect earlier cervical cancer or even pre-cancerous lesions that can be removed and prevent the development of cancer," she said. Boards are most likely to have mandatory retirement age policiesHaving a mandatory retirement policy for board members is up to the discretion of individual companies. “In 2023, 69% of [S&P 500] boards reported having a mandatory retirement policy — down one point from 2022,” according to an August 2023 report from executive search firm Spencer Stuart. Many other public safety occupations do have mandatory retirement ages. The whys behind mandatory retirement agesThere may be varied stated reasons for having a mandatory retirement age, such as opening up the pipeline for younger talent to have more opportunities. For that reason, advocates for older workers, like the AARP, contend all mandatory retirement ages should be eliminated, even for demanding jobs involving public safety.

The number of new cancer cases in the U.S. is expected to top 2 million for the first time in 2024, based on new research that also points to shifting age patterns among cancer patients and a troubling increase in overall cancer incidence among people younger than 50 . The American Cancer Society’s latest statistical report, released on Wednesday, says the country’s cancer mortality rate fell by 33% from 1991 through 2021. Prostate cancer incidence increased by about 3% per year after experiencing a nearly 40% drop from 2007 to 2014. Overall, researchers project 2,001,140 new cancer cases and 611,720 cancer deaths will occur in the U.S. in 2024. Lisa Lacasse, president of the American Cancer Society’s advocacy affiliate, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, said the report’s findings underscore a need for policies that help to address such disparities.

But industry experts say governments need to offer incentives for companies to bring sustainable AC technologies to market and scale up. Removing humidity requires cooling air to the point at which water vapour becomes a liquid to be drained. This inability to get rid of humidity without first cooling the air makes conventional ACs less efficient. The company's AC prototype uses these materials to dry out air, aiming to produce fewer emissions than traditional ACs. More than 1 billion people living in warm climates still lack access to cooling, according to nonprofit Sustainable Energy for All.

John DavisDeals like Davis' have made Texas — America's oil capital for more than a century — the top producer of renewable energy in the US. The state has long generated the most wind power and is second only to California as a solar-energy producer. The high-stakes battle for Texas' energy future is a microcosm of how tricky America's green transition is shaping up to be, especially when politics are involved. Slowing down renewable energy could cost Texas in the long term, both economically and socially. The coalition seems to be growing stronger, even as Texas politicians shift further to the right on issues beyond renewable energy.

Jaber, who is also head of United Arab Emirates oil giant ADNOC, has this year urged the energy industry to join the fight against climate change. He was a controversial pick to lead COP28, which begins next month, because his country is an OPEC member and a major oil exporter. "We need a system-wide holistic transformation of entire economies - economies that currently run on the equivalent of 250 million barrels of oil, gas, and coal every single day," Jaber said at an oil and gas conference in Abu Dhabi. The COP28 summit is scheduled to take place in Dubai between Nov. 30 and Dec. 12. Major oil and gas company chiefs held meetings with heavy industry bosses on Sunday in the UAE to discuss a decarbonization commitment ahead of COP28.

Scientists have analyzed letters written by Vlad the Impaler in the 15th century. Traces of protein on the letters suggest he suffered from hemolacria, which causes blood to be present in tears. There are a wide variety of disorders that can cause blood tears, ranging from blood clotting issues to unusual menstruation. Analysis of the proteins found traces of a bacteria that causes plague, but this disease is not linked to blood tears. "To our reckoning, this is the first time such research has been carried out and has helped to bring to the limelight the health status of Vlad Dracula the Impaler," the authors said in the study.

The test also measured how well the lenders would cope with a global rise in interest rates. "Major UK banks’ capital and liquidity positions remain robust and profitability has increased, which enables them both to improve their capital positions and to support their customers." The Bank said it had decided to maintain its counter-cyclical capital buffer (CCyB) for banks unchanged. The Additional Chief Secretary, G. Anupama, said in a text message, "Enquiry is underway" and directed Reuters to the health minister for Haryana state, Anil Vij, for further details. Its chief minister and health minister, to whom Yashpal also sent his complaint, did not respond to requests for comment. Naresh Kumar Goyal, the founder of Maiden Pharmaceuticals, told Reuters in December his company did nothing wrong in the production of the cough syrup. The bribery allegation was one of about half a dozen claims of corruption by Yashpal against Taneja in the letter. Yashpal told Reuters he did not comply, because he did not feel comfortable bringing such details to the deputy of someone he had accused of corruption.

By Liam McCabeEvery spring for five years, it was my job to test and review window air conditioners. When the Midea U-Shaped Air Conditioner arrived in 2020, seemingly out of nowhere, it upended everything I hated about this staid, stale category since I began my reviewer gig in the 2010s. For people who have to rely on window ACs to cool a scorching home, I’d argue that it’s the biggest summertime quality-of-life improvement in decades. The biggest advantage of the U-shaped Air Conditioner is it’s so much quieter than a typical window unit, thanks to its namesake, weird-looking chassis. It looks like a standard air conditioner has been split in two, with just a short band of plastic holding the halves together along their bottom edge.
A company told workers they'd have to pay high fees if they quit within three years, the Labor Department said. In a lawsuit against the agency, the DOL said one nurse was asked to pay $24,000 in future profits. Lawyers for the agency, ACS, said the DOL's suit is "unsupported by either the facts or the law." The DOL likened employees' wages to a loan that they may have to repay to the company alongside interest and fees. "To be clear, ACS has never demanded – and no nurse has ever repaid – their earned wages to ACS. "
MADRID, March 2 (Reuters) - A joint venture between the U.S. unit of Spanish engineering group ACS (ACS.MC) and Philadelphia-based Yates Construction has won a contract to build an electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in Kansas as part of a $4 billion investment by Japan's Panasonic (6752.T) group, the companies said on Wednesday. The EV battery factory in the city of De Soto is expected to start operating by the end of March 2025 and will reach approximately 30 gigawatts-hour of annual production capacity, according to a statement by ACS' Turner Construction. "The battery manufacturing facility is a critical part of Panasonic's investment in the United States to expand EV battery production capacity," the company said. In addition to the assembly facility, the project will include construction of a central utility plant and support buildings, it added.
